The Artist Rise #027

Welcome to your weekly resource for all things branding, release strategy, and overall artist development.

Every week I'll help you tackle brand-building and strengthen your artistry by asking questions that dig deeper into your true artist self.

Let's get into it.

The Question

When it comes to something new and exciting that everyone seems to be jumping on, what's in it for me? Where's the line between "just a trend" and a "relevant opportunity?"

Why it Matters

I was thinking about Valentine's this week and as I scrolled through my feed I saw the usual: brands and artists taking the opportunity to act on the holiday.

Love a situational push, you gotta take the opportunities in front of you, right?

But while some are great, others feel forced.

And this isn't uncommon. It happens every time a holiday (or even a new trend) rolls around.

And that's because artists skip an important step:

Assessing where the opportunity aligns with your artistry.

I've said this before, everything you release musically or post for content should check one box:

Does it align with your brand as an artist?

If it does, then great. If it doesn't, try it a different way.

Same goes for these timely opportunities to be a part of the conversation.

For example, the pop girlies of the music landscape make perfect sense to jump on the valentine's day bandwagon.

A punk rock band might not.

So, how do you figure out what works for your artistry and what's better left untouched?

Think about it this way:

If you take the opportunity out of its context, does it still work?

If you took the "valentine's day" piece of your post, would the content still make sense if it was posted in the middle of September?

Would it still aligned with your larger artist picture?

Same goes for things like trending songs that everybody and your mother are covering. If you're not adding a really cool spin to it or it fits right in your corner of the genre landscape, don't feel like you have to touch it.

When you jump on too many bandwagons, it does a couple things.

  1. It dilutes your original content
  2. And it takes away from the opportunites you DO act on if it becomes "typical"

So next time you see something you feel like you should get in on, evaluate it and make sure it's working for you and not against.

Putting it to Action

Take a glimpse at any upcoming events or holidays in the calendar.

(there are plenty of social media calendars out there that you can use as a starting point).

Make note of ones that make sense for you and cross out ones that don't.

Take note of any common things you find on either list and pin it in the back of your mind.

Keep a pulse check on what's new and exciting out there.

And most importantly, write yourself a little post-it note wherever you make content and write:

"What's in it for me and my artistry?"

Until next time,

-Ava
