The Artist Rise #022

Welcome to your weekly resource for all things branding, release strategy, and overall artist development.

Every week I'll help you tackle brand-building and strengthen your artistry by asking questions that dig deeper into your true artist self. Let's get into it.

The Question

What is it besides music that sparks something in you? What else are you passionate about?

The Importance

We're human, and being human means caring about more than one thing and having something we're passionate about.

And the thing about passions is that they shape our mindset and drive certain decisions, whether we are aware of it or not.

It influences our choices, but it influences our art and creation as well.

I ask a question like this on the Why Music? podcast, and it's always interesting what answers I get.

Sometimes it's sports, sometimes it's nature, sometimes it's something totally different and random in relation to being a music artist.

But they all have one common theme: they can connect to their artistry.

Whether it's directly related to being in music, or on the opposite end of the passion spectrum, it's a part of who you are.

And artistry is more about who you are as an artist than your music itself.

If you're active and like going to the gym, it shows you value your own well being.

If hiking or nature is your thing, then it shows you're someone down to earth and your environment is something that matters to you.

If you have another creative outlet like painting or dance, that tells fans you value creativity in all forms and have more to you than just the music.

Like everything else we dive into here, it's just another internal look at who you are as a person and an artist and adding another layer of defining what that means for your brand.

Plus, it might open some doors for other content, merch, or other creative ways to connect with your audience.

Your Task

Look at your hobbies and interests and see what matters most to you.

Even pull a few different options if you're someone that does a lot of things.

Then take a step further and look at ways it connects to who you are and shapes you creatively.

Once you start drawing those lines, find ways to incorporate it into your artistry and your brand.

Even if it's super niche or something you think your audience might not get behind, dig into it and see what possibilities there are.

It'll help you define more of your own brand in a way that makes sense for who you are as a person, and it'll also help you separate more from other artists in your same wheelhouse.

And as a bonus, you should be able to walk away with a new way to connect with your current (& future) fans.

Until next time,

-Ava
